Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders - OMD's

An OMD is a disorder of the Orofacial muscle complex, which includes the mouth, tongue, lips, and facial musculature. OMD's may interfere with the normal growth and development of the muscles and bones of the face and mouth. This can result in difficulties in speech, swallowing, and breathing through the nose. A few of the many common symptoms of OMD's include TMJ disorders, such as jaw pain, clicking or popping sounds, or limited jaw movement. Sleep disordered breathing, such as snoring, sleep apnea or difficulty breathing during sleep, is also a very common OMD along with mouth breathing, open mouth posture, tongue tie, low tongue rest position, and dental malocclusions. If left untreated, these disorders may lead to speech and language problems, orofacial pain, obstructive sleep apnea, orthodontic relapse, posture problems, nutritional and digestive problems, learning and behavior issues, and overall health issues.
